Detergent dosing is the one laundry variable almost every household gets wrong in the same direction. Nobody underdoses on purpose. The cap gets filled to the top, an extra splash goes in for a load that looks dirty, and the result is quietly worse laundry and a machine that develops problems the owner blames on the appliance. Detergent is not a case where more input produces more output. Past a fairly modest point the curve flattens and then bends downward.

What a dose is supposed to accomplish

A wash dose has a specific chemical job. Surfactants have to reach a concentration high enough to form micelles, the tiny structures that surround oily soil and hold it in suspension so it leaves with the water instead of settling back onto the fabric. Below that concentration the wash is weak. Above it, the extra surfactant has nothing left to do, because the soil in the load has already been captured. The additional detergent simply stays in the water, and then in the fabric.

This is why manufacturers put dose lines on caps and scoops rather than telling you to pour until it looks right. The lines are usually keyed to three variables: load size, soil level, and water hardness. Those three, and nothing else. A slightly dirtier load moves you one line up, not to the brim.
