Waste handling is the least glamorous corner of a cleaning cupboard and the one where a bad decision is most likely to cost money. A bag that splits on the stairs, a liner that never fitted the can, a pipe blocked by something that should have gone in the bin: all three come from the same place, which is buying on a gallon number and a brand name instead of on the two specifications that actually decide the outcome.

Gauge is measured in two different units, and they are not comparable

Bag thickness appears either in mils or in microns, and the unit is a clue to the plastic. One mil is one thousandth of an inch, which works out to about 25.4 microns. Compostable bags are a program, not a material upgrade

A certified compostable liner only performs its function if the household actually composts or has municipal collection that accepts it.
