Most detergent brands sell the same name in four shapes: a bottle, a box of powder, a tub of pacs, and a stack of dissolving sheets. The shelf treats that as a convenience decision. The formulation does not. A powder and a liquid wearing identical branding are not one product decanted into different containers, and the gap shows up in what each one can carry, how it behaves in cold water, how precisely it can be dosed, and how it has to be stored.
Water is the first thing that separates the formats
A conventional liquid detergent is mostly water. That water is doing a job, because it keeps surfactants, enzymes and fragrance in a stable solution that pours and disperses immediately, but it also means a large share of the bottle weight is not cleaning anything. Concentration is the lever manufacturers pull against this. A bottle marked with a multiplier such as 4x or 10x is claiming a reduced dose per load rather than a stronger wash, and the practical consequence is that the cap fill line changes. Reading the cap on a concentrate the way you read the cap on a standard liquid is the single most common dosing error in the category.
Powder removes the water entirely. That changes the shipping weight, the shelf life and, more importantly, the ingredient list, because several useful laundry chemicals are simply not stable sitting in a bottle of water for a year.
What liquid is actually built to do
Liquids are the format of choice for oily and greasy soils. Surfactants in solution wet out a fabric quickly and start lifting body oils and food grease before the drum has finished filling, which is why liquids are also the format most often recommended for direct pretreatment on a collar or a cuff. Applying a small amount of the same detergent to a stain and letting it sit is a use case a powder cannot match without being dissolved into a paste first.
Liquids also dissolve reliably in cold water, which matters more every year as machines and care labels push wash temperatures down. Sensitive skin formulations tend to appear as liquids first for the same reason: dye and fragrance can be left out without destabilizing the product. Why powder has not gone away
Powder is not a legacy format kept alive by habit. It carries chemistry that liquids cannot.
The percarbonate problem
Sodium percarbonate, the oxygen bleach that shows up as an oxidizing booster in laundry products, releases hydrogen peroxide when it meets water. That is exactly what makes it useful and exactly why it cannot sit in a bottle of liquid detergent for a year without decomposing. Powders can carry it dry and stable. This is the structural reason a powder is often the better answer for dingy whites, tannin marks and general grayness, and why standalone oxidizers are sold as powders too, including sodium percarbonate sold as a laundry and household booster.
Powders also carry more alkaline builder per dose, typically sodium carbonate, which raises wash pH and helps soften water so surfactants are not wasted binding to calcium and magnesium. In a hard water household that is a real performance difference rather than a marketing one. The trade against all of that is dissolution. Powder needs enough water, enough agitation and enough temperature to go fully into solution. In a cold, short, low water cycle a powder can leave undissolved residue on dark fabrics and in the drum, which is a dosing and loading problem rather than a product defect. Adding powder to the drum before the clothes, rather than dropping it on top of a packed load, is the usual manufacturer instruction.
Pacs, tablets and sheets buy dose control
A pac is a premeasured dose in a water soluble film. The appeal is obvious: no cap, no drips, no guessing. The cost is that the dose is fixed. A half load and a heavily soiled full load get the same amount of detergent, so a pac household either overdoses small loads or underdoses large ones. Some ranges answer this with a two pac instruction for large or heavily soiled loads, which is a label detail worth reading rather than assuming.
Pacs also depend on the film dissolving. Cold water, an overpacked drum, or a pac dropped on top of clothes instead of into the empty drum can all leave film fragments stuck to a garment. Pacs are a documented child poisoning hazard
This is not a footnote. Concentrated liquid laundry pacs have been the subject of repeated poison control warnings and packaging regulation in the United States because young children mistake them for candy or toys, and because biting one delivers a concentrated dose of surfactant directly to the mouth and airway. Store pacs in their original closed container, out of sight and out of reach of children, and never in an open bowl or jar on the machine. Handle them with dry hands, because a wet hand starts dissolving the film immediately and can rupture it. If a pac is swallowed or its contents reach the eyes, contact Poison Control or emergency services. The same storage rule applies to tablets and to dissolving sheets, which look just as much like something edible to a toddler.
Cost structure, not price
Comparing formats by the size of the container tells you very little. The number that matters is loads per package at the dose you actually use, and that number moves for reasons the packaging does not advertise. A concentrate delivers more loads per liter but punishes an overpour harder. A powder box delivers a lot of loads but only if the scoop is leveled rather than heaped. A pac delivers an exact count, which is the easiest format to budget and the hardest to stretch. Households that run many small loads usually get the worst value from pacs and the best from a liquid with a readable cap.
Choosing on the household, not the format
Cold washing, frequent small loads and pretreatment work point toward a liquid. Hard water, dingy whites and heavy soil point toward a powder, or a liquid supported by a separate oxygen bleach booster. Shared laundry rooms, travel and anyone who chronically overpours point toward a pac or a sheet, provided there are no young children in the home and the storage rule above is followed without exception. None of these formats is a universal answer, and the brand on the front of the package is a much weaker signal than the format behind it.
