What Must Never Be Mixed, and Why Bleach Sits at the Center of Every Warning

Almost every serious household chemical injury that does not involve swallowing something involves combining two products that were each safe on their own. The combinations are not obscure. They happen in bathrooms and kitchens, usually because one cleaner did not finish the job and a second was reached for. Household cleaning products should be used one at a time, on a rinsed surface, and never combined, decanted together or layered.

Bleach and ammonia produce chloramine gas

Sodium hypochlorite, the active in chlorine bleach, reacts with ammonia to form chloramine vapors. These are irritant and toxic gases. Exposure in an enclosed room such as a bathroom is the scenario that sends people to emergency departments, and a running shower or a closed door makes it worse rather than better.

The reason this combination keeps happening is that both halves are sold as ordinary cleaners and sit near each other on the same shelf. This catalog stocks both. The practical rules for the drain openers category are short. Use one product. Follow its dwell time.
